I wanted to really make this a stage outfit so I opted out of doing a thong and went for high cut shorts with the side seam to mimic tuxedo pants. I had hoped to be able to find a boys tuxedo jacket that I would be able to alter but wasn’t able too. So the jacket had to be made by Sean who also made the shorts. It was our first time working together so we met up a lot to talk about how I wanted the outfit done, what was possible, the types of fabrics to use and what not. In the end the jacket was made out of cotton lined in red taffeta, black tap pants, and a white boned bustier with halter “tux shirt”. The bustier top features a vest-front shape and black piping across the top and the halter top has an attached bow tie.
The gloves were purchased from an antique store, my favorite place to get gloves for a slightly smaller hand. They were old white leather gloves and absolutely beautiful. They were completely affordable. The top is a halter with a faux corset attached to it, which laces up the back. It also has dress cuffs, which are made out of the same material as the corset, to wear if I choose not to wear the jacket.
It was Zatanna’s trademark top hat that made this fairly inexpensive costume very expensive. The biggest problem is a lot of people don’t get an actual top hat. They get a carriage drivers hat, or a stove top hat, so I wanted to make sure I got an actual top hat. Turns out there are only like 2 makers of collapsible top hats still around. So I got the Satin top hat, which is collapsible and perfect.
I went with a large fishnet pattern because from a distance and in photos it would not come across as grey, and was fortunate to find a great magicians wand which was made out of holly and ebony wood, which just comes across much nicer than the plastic ones. |
